Heating system efficiency depends mostly on carrying out regular services and repairing any faults/leaks as soon as they occur, that’s why it’s important not to forget about this. Central heating system services should be carried out favorably in summer so that there won’t be any problems with heating during colder seasons and winter.
What should be checked?
Boiler and central heating service include:
Checking the ventilation in the boiler/plant room – this should always be the first thing carried out during a service as most serious problems regarding the exploitation of heating appliances are caused by inadequate ventilation. In some cases, it can even lead to CO2 (Carbon Monoxide) escaping and poisoning the household, that’s why it’s important to check whether the boiler/plant room has adequate ventilation.
What is Boiler Service All About?
Most importantly, it’s there cleaning, leak checks, and checking the safety of the device. How frequently a service has to be carried out depends on the boiler power (kW) and their make, as well as a type of fuel used. Boiler cleaning means the removal of any dirt from the inside of heat exchanger.
The frequency of the need to clean the boiler should be checked in the technical documents of the device, provided by the manufacturer. Solid fuel boilers are the ones that need most frequent cleaning, while gas boilers require the least frequent cleaning.
Boiler service is the cleaning of a heat exchanger, condensate trap, the setting of gas valve (ratio CO/CO2) and burner pressure, checking flue, and operation of a safety device.
Power flushing has to be carried out every 5 years as sludge accumulates inside the boiler and central heating. Its removal will improve the efficiency of those devices and reduce bills, as well as increasing the boiler’s lifespan.
Boiler service must be carried out by a qualified plumber (gas engineer), if it’s carried out by someone without the right qualifications then it can result in damages to the appliance. Even cleaning the burner is not easy as it requires the knowledge of how to handle the parts as they can be easily damaged.
Furthermore, wiring connection and the pump must be checked. It’s worth noting that all pumps can cause problems if not used for a long time as dirt in the water accumulates and can stop the pump from working.
While carrying out boiler service, after turning on the appliance, the difference between flow and return must be checked, making sure that it’s not above 10 C. It it’s greater, then it means that not enough flow in the boiler, which can be caused by a dirty filter or heat exchanger, or a fault in the pump.
Pressure should be checked to make sure that it’s between 0.8 and 1.6bar. If it’s lower, the system needs to be filled to the correct pressure. Low pressure might be the result of leaks, that’s why it’s necessary to check all previous areas where leakages occurred and places where such faults can occur.
Expansion vessel must be checked to make sure that it has the right pressure and that the membrane is not damaged.
Relief valve (safety valve) check must be performed to see if it is working correctly and not leaking. If there are any problems with it then it should be cleaned or replaced straight away.
